چکیده

In this note, G is a compact connected Lie group. We are concerned with the torsion of the cohomology ring H*(G; Z) of G over the integers, certain commutative subgroups of G, and relations between these two questions. NOTATION. E(mi, • • • , mr) or £ A ( ^ I , • • • , mr) denotes the exterior algebra over the ring A of a free .4-module with r generators of respective degrees wi, • • • , mr; p is a prime number, Zv the field of integers mod p1 Q the field of rational numbers. Tors H is the torsion subgroup of a group Hy ord M the order of a finite group M. The identity component of a closed subgroup H if G is denoted by Ho, if L is a subset of G, its centralizer in G is denoted by Z(L).

Lie-like Decompositions of Groups Definable in O-minimal Structures

There are strong analogies between groups definable in o-minimal structures and real Lie groups. Nevertheless, unlike the real case, not every definable group has maximal definably compact subgroups. We study definable groups G which are not definably compact showing that they have a unique maximal normal definable torsion-free subgroup N ; the quotient G/N always has maximal definably compact ...

On Torsion Subgroups of Lie Groups

We are concerned with torsion subgroups of Lie groups. We extend the classical result of C. Jordan on the structure of finite linear groups to torsion subgroups of connected Lie groups. 1. In [1], Boothby and Wang proved that, for any connected Lie group G, there exists a number k{G) such that any finite subgroup contains an abelian normal subgroup whose index is bounded by k{G), thereby genera...

Semi-abelian categories, torsion theories and factorisation systems

Semi-abelian categories [5] provide a suitable axiomatic context to study, among other things, the (co)homology of non-abelian algebraic structures (such as groups, compact groups, crossed modules, commutative rings, and Lie algebras), torsion and radical theories, and commutator theory. In this talk a brief introduction to some elementary properties of these categories will be given, before fo...

Difference algebraic subgroups of commutative algebraic groups over finite fields

We study the question of which torsion subgroups of commutative algebraic groups over finite fields are contained in modular difference algebraic groups for some choice of a field automorphism. We show that if G is a simple commutative algebraic group over a finite field of characteristic p, ` is a prime different from p, and for some difference closed field (K, σ) the `-primary torsion of G(K)...

Commutative group algebras of highly torsion-complete abelian p-groups

A new class of abelian p-groups with all high subgroups isomorphic is defined. Commutative modular and semisimple group algebras over such groups are examined. The results obtained continue our recent statements published in Comment. Math. Univ. Carolinae (2002).
